about

The long awaited debut album from New Zealand's Marquis & The Vanguard is finally set to be released in June 2013. Hailing from the Wairarapa, the extremely talented singer/songwriter has made his mark on the international stage in front of thousands of screaming sports fans all around the world as a professional tennis player. Now he is set to take on the world again; this time with guitar in hand.

Marcus Daniell's goal is simple: become the greatest songwriter of all time. Failing that, selling more copies of his debut album 'My Skinny bones' than Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' would be relatively satisfying… Should both of those goals refuse to come to fruition, putting a smile on the face of a child would suffice.

In addition to the album being an emotional outlet for Marcus, it also stemmed from his awareness that the greatest albums of all time have generally come from artists who are not hearing music that they can connect with on the radio, online or through any other medium. Marcus was fed up with hearing a tirade of music with no emotional connection, lyrics without any soul or substance and melodies that have been rinsed and re-used time and time again. He turned to his love of writing and song to come up with an album that is everything he wanted to hear in music today. If you feel that same sense of frustration with songs on the radio then promise the music lover inside yourself to give this album at least one listen! You won't regret it.

Track Name: Tonight
Darling, I was warned to let you go.
But my mind made up my mind years ago.
So I sing this ordinary song to find my way back to your heart.
Because my ordinary voice never learned how to give up.

With not a soul in sight,
I’ll grow bold with you tonight.

Lying on your side in your lonely room.
Staring at the moon despite the roof.
Honestly I tried, I tried, I tried to shoulder in,
on all your foggy minded, misguided notions of the way we both should live.

But now I know I was right.
I’ll be gone by tonight.

Tonight my friend, I’m whole again.
I won’t go with you tonight.
I won’t betray myself again.
I won’t go with you tonight.
No you’re on your own tonight.
Track Name: Give & Take
My mother told me not to lie,
but my honesty’s offensive.
My father told me to be kind,
but I live by the principle of reciprocation.
Love is a two way street.
These things I’ll do for you if you would only do them for me.

My sister told me to be true,
but truth has a thousand faces.
My brother lives the way I want to,
with integrity and enthusiasm and all of those other four or five syllable words that I just can’t think of right now.
Like non-judgmental and… Fuck.
For all this I wish I could

Fall in love with someone
Unlike me.
Track Name: Home
Early days but I’ve got these achy bones.
Pull my leg when I get too comfortable.
I suppose it is a balance act, a feather and a stone.
I suppose.

And it feels like home.
It feels like home.
I’ve broken down, and once again I find myself alone.
And it feels like home.

Carry on ‘cause it’s a step along the way.
Keep your chin up ‘cause it’s a game you chose to play.
Let me know if I’m that man who never knows when he is done.
‘Cause I don’t know, I don’t know.
Bonny days, with ups and downs.
The downs will grind you to the ground.
And I’m that stone.
I’m that stone.

And it feels like home.
It feels like home.
Once again I’ve broken down, and once again I am alone.
And it feels like home.

And it feels like home.
It feels like home.
I’ve broken down, and once again I find myself alone.
And it feels like home.
Track Name: Aurora
Northern lights
twist and tumble through the night.
These solar flares, pushing at the boundaries of all we hold dear.
I’ll watch until the morning light shines,
and throws its arms around the night.

We can’t replace these memories.
Our comfort is gone, so just sit tight and wait,
wait for the last rain to fall.
‘Cause I’m David and Goliath rolled in one.
I flew so high my wings were ash when I was done.
When I flew into the sun.
When I stole the sun.

Icarus was such a waste
His swollen hands, his blistered face.
He falls.
He falls without a trace.
Without a trace.

Icarus was such a waste
His blistered hands, his swollen face.
He falls
He falls without a trace.
Track Name: Weigh Me Down
When I was leaving you were trying to hide your face behind your hands.
I know you would deny it,
but behind your hands your tears were making tracks.
We both know it’s over.
We were never meant to last beyond the sun.
But though our chapter’s ended, the next part of my life has not yet begun

Oh but weigh me down with lead.
I don’t want to fly, I’ll sink instead.
And on my way down, on my way down,
I’ll change my mind.

The next time I see you we won’t know what to talk about at first.
When this much has been endured the pleasantries seem trivial at best.
The sparks are all but faded.
The ocean years erode it all away.
But memories are razors, and in my mind I see us like today.

Oh but weigh me down with lead.
I don’t want to cry, I’ll drink instead.
And on my way down, on my way down,
You’ll close your eyes.

Oh but weigh me down with lead.
I don’t want to fly, I’ll sink instead.
And on my way down, on my way down,
I’ll change my mind.
Track Name: Wild Wolves
What if I told you that you’d never be
able to sleep the night through without me?
What if I told you that you’re lost?
Running round in your daydream,
just remembering, remembering all that was.
What was.

I won’t give up without a fight.
I won’t give up without some way out.

Everything around me growing old.
Winter coming, things are getting cold.
Bring back the warm nights under starry skies when I clutched you tight between my paws.
But those days are over, gone, red rover, King Kong.
But that doesn’t mean that I can’t dream,
and reminisce on all the times that I tried
to tame the wolves that run wild behind your eyes.
They’re wild still.
And if I don’t tame them then I don’t know who will.

But I won’t give up without a fight.
I won’t give up without some way out.
Track Name: He Will Be Fine
Grow another life,
like a gecko minus tail.
Grow another bone where your heart was, oh no please don’t.
Don’t give up on me yet my love.

He says come on now, I need a little something
to stimulate my soul.
She says hold on, hold on,
I thought I was your perfect girl?
But that was yesterday my love.

There's something in the air now.
Watch our sand run out.

She’ll regret it but he won’t.
He’ll be better off alone.

She will wake up, another face beside her now.
He will wake up to the bluest skies.
She will wake up, her regrets will hold her down.
He will wake up and he will be fine.
Track Name: The Bolsheviks
It’s only you under the shelter.
It’s only you safe in the light.
It’s only you.
It's only you.
It's only you.
It's only you, not I.

It’s only me running for cover.
It’s only me running from love.
It’s only me.
It's only me.
It's only me.
It's only me, lost in the dark.

Lost.
Track Name: Hope
Come down
from your elegant lies to substance.
Because
my cynical vision leaves you transparent.

I’ll find my way back in to hope.
I know this time it won’t be so hard.

I am
impatient by nature, but you know that.
I forced
you to jump but you couldn’t do it.

I’ll find my way back in to hope.
And I know this time it won’t be so hard.

Take your time,
I will be here with my good clothes on.
Put me down, tentatively, as a yes.
Because I might break down again.

But I’ll find my way back in to hope.
I know this time it won’t be so hard.
